Top tips for moving home in a slower property market

There is a great deal of speculation in the UK about what will happen to property prices in the coming months. The cost of living crisis is squeezing every household and that certainly has a knock-on effect for the housing market in the country.

As Which? recently pointed out, the Halifax Home Mover Review found that fewer households moved in the first six months of 2023 than in the same period in 2020 – and remember that three years ago the property market was all but shut down for months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite fewer people moving home so far in 2023, that doesn’t mean there isn’t demand. If you want to make this the year that you either get on the property ladder or move to a new abode, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of success.

The top tip from the consumer organisation is to get your finances in order and speak to a mortgage broker early on in your search for a new home so that you are clear how much you can afford. This is especially important given that the Bank of England increased the base rate by 0.5 per cent towards the end of June, meaning it now sits at five per cent.

As This Is Money explained, this has had a significant impact on the mortgage rates available to homeowners and buyers, pushing them higher and lowering affordability for many.

If you are selling your home and hoping for a quick sale and to receive at least the asking price, you can do several things to improve your chances. For example, tidying up your home and making sure it’s presentable in the photos will do more to boost its appeal than you might imagine.

However, if you’re looking around at your property and wondering how you’re going to make it look tidy and presentable, it’s worth considering how you can declutter ahead of your move and potentially even get a short-term storage unit to tide you over until moving day.

Here at Removals Unlimited, we offer both short- and long-term storage facilities, in a very easily accessible location. Our storage units are fully secure, weatherproof and clean, which makes them an ideal place to store your possessions ahead of your move.

It’s also worth thinking about what you could pack ahead of your move, such as seasonal clothes, or even some of the books on your shelves that you won’t read before you move home. Packing can take time, so the sooner you start the easier it will be.

Of course, packing can also be stressful, and if you’d rather avoid it as much as possible then speak to us about our full packing service, where our professional team of movers and packers will arrive at your home a few days before your move, with the necessary packing materials, and take care of all of the packing for you.

To learn more about our services and to receive a free, no-obligation quote, please get in touch and a member of our friendly team will contact you to find out more about your circumstances and conduct a free video house survey.
