What is the best order in which to pack your belongings before a move?

There are very few people who look forward to packing their belongings up ahead of moving home. Having supported hundreds of people with their moves, we understand how stressful and disruptive it can feel, even if you’re excited about getting settled into your new property.

While we offer a full house packing service in Bournemouth, Poole and beyond, which means our experienced professional packers will come to your property in the days ahead of your move and carefully box up all of your possessions, we also understand that some of you would rather pack your own belongings before moving day.

If you are among those who want to take control of your own packing, you may find some advice shared by HoHomes & Gardens useful.

Writing for the publication, Millie Hurst explained she has moved house multiple times and has come up with a system that helps her maintain her packing momentum and one that ensures she doesn’t accidentally pack much-needed items too far ahead of moving day.

Her advice is to begin by packing ornaments a few days ahead of your move. As she points out, these aren’t items you will need in the coming days and she’s also found that removing some of the sentimental treasures that dot your rooms can make it easier to say goodbye to your current home.

Next on the list are out-of-season clothes and spare bedding. One of her top tips for packing bedding is to put the duvet cover, sheet and one of the matching pillowcases inside the other pillowcase, thereby keeping the whole set neatly together.

The last things to pack, meanwhile, are the likes of cutlery and crockery, essential kitchen appliances (think your kettle) and cleaning products, as you’ll definitely want those when you arrive in your new home before you start unpacking in earnest.

Ms Hurst also noted that you will need more boxes and packing materials than you think, so it’s best to be prepared. You can order everything you need, from boxes in various sizes to rolls of bubble wrap and tape, from our Box Shop. We do our best to keep moving materials affordable, so you can pick up what you need for your move without breaking the bank.

Of course, packing up your existing home is just one side of the equation when it comes to moving house – you also have to unpack on the other side.

An article for Ideal Home recommended that you consider the storage solutions available in your new abode before you move, so that you can start preparing for where you’ll store your belongings once you move in.

This will also give you an opportunity to identify a need for more storage in your new abode, allowing you to consider whether it is worth purchasing multi-purpose furniture, such as beds with storage, a TV storage unit or even a storage sofa.
